The Purple Hat Affair:

View Park Section of the National Council of Negro Women

Announces 5th Annual High Tea

Redefining Sisterhood through Unprecedented Times

LA County 2nd District Supervisor Holly Mitchell

to bring Keynote Address

At a time when Black women and girls are facing mounting social, economic, and political barriers, the View Park Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Incorporated (NCNW) will celebrate both achievement and collective empowerment at its 5th Annual Purple Hat Affair High Tea on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Culver City.

The annual event serves as a graduation ceremony for young women participating in NCNW’s “Saving Ourselves Sisters” program, a transformative initiative that equips girls and women with the tools to navigate today’s challenges and build strong futures.

More than a celebration, this year’s Purple Hat Affair is a moment of collective urgency and solidarity. As funding cuts, the dismantling of DEI initiatives, and widening economic disparities threaten the stability of Black communities, particularly Black women and girls, NCNW is bringing the community together to organize, uplift, and invest in one another’s survival and success.

Honoring Community Trailblazers

This year’s event will honor two dynamic leaders whose work reflects the spirit of resilience and community care:

  • Janet Kelly, Founder and Executive Director of Sanctuary of Hope, whose life’s work supports Transition Age Youth (16–25) through housing support, mentoring, counseling, and leadership development. The programs help young people affected by child welfare involvement, homelessness, and economic hardship move toward stability and self-sufficiency.

  • Lauren Brazile, Founder and Director of We Grow LA, whose organization nurtures community growth through mentorship, family support programs, and safe spaces that empower young leaders and strengthen neighborhoods across Los Angeles.

Keynote Address by

L.A. County Supervisor Holly Mitchell

Los Angeles County District 2 Supervisor Holly Mitchell, nationally respected advocate for equity, justice, and economic opportunity, will bring the keynote address.

Supervisor Mitchell currently serves as Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. While she represents the two million residents of the 2nd District, she is a nationally respected advocate for equity, justice and opportunity.

Why the Moment Matters Now

Across the country, and especially in South Los Angeles, Black women are facing a critical crossroads.

Recent federal and corporate budget cuts, the erosion of diversity initiatives, and rising racial hostility have intensified longstanding inequities. These challenges make programs like “Saving Ourselves Sisters” more vital than ever.

The program provides a holistic curriculum for girls and women that includes:

  • Domestic violence prevention

  • Financial literacy and economic empowerment

  • Job readiness and workforce training

  • HIV/STD awareness and health education

These resources are lifelines that equip Black women with the tools needed to survive, lead, and thrive.
